How to make an inlay pattern

I have the inlay cut out of the body of the knife for the inlay to go into but I am having a hard time figuring out how to make the pattern. I was thinking of lining the inlay with something, possible Vaseline and pouring epoxy into it to get an exact pattern but I am not sure that is going to give me what I need. Any suggestions?
