With all this talk about the bowies and poeple making sheaths, I thought I'd like to try and make one for myt sirupati.
The only catch is I want to make it out of kydex . I've heard it's simple , I just haven't heard exactly how it's done and where you can get the sheets of kydex .

HELP !!!!

Edd, I don't want to discourage you but it is not quite as easy as experts make it sound. I toyed with it some and decided my time would be better spent doing other things.

Directions have been posted in the Shop Talk forum and archive.

My impression is there is no chance your first effort will come out looking great -- functional, probably, but don't expect to do great-looking work in kydex without some practice. Still, it could be worth developing the skill ... probably most of us have enough knives that we'd like better sheaths for.... I'm tempted to give it a try myself, but so far I'm sticking to leather ... I know how to work with that....

As Uncle said, it's definitely a slowly acquired skill. Chiro75 is a forumite who taught himself how to make kydex sheaths. I think he sometimes makes sheaths for other forumites who send him their blades (for a reasonable fee, of course) I've seen pics of his work--he's become pretty good at it. He's a chiropractor by trade; this is just his hobby. If you find a post by him you might want to email him and ask him about it. He's very helpful about providing information and tips to others; he might give you the info you need to get you started. Hope this helps.

Where is Chiro, anyway. He used to stick his nose in the forum all the time and now I don't see him. Maybe he is too busy getting rich popping backs! I teased him about that but he took it pretty well.

I'd rather do it with leather if I must do it. I can cut and sew better than I can heat and form.

Khukuri FAQ

I have made several Kydex sheaths. It is an art to get just the right balance of coverage, release tension and security. That is why I have my Kumar Kobra with Frank Sigmon to do my shoulder rig.

Working Kydex is kind of like being around a woman. You have to know just how hot to get them, Where to pinch, and how long you have to last until they cool. You still get your fingers burned on occasion.

Cheers,
