does anyone know the most effective way to streighten leaf springs from a car for a sword blank? im thinking about heating and forging them streight but if i dont have to i dont want to

you need to have 2 people and something that is floor level to bang on. it dont take long and dont over beat yourself.

and if you figure out how to make 1 around the whole in the center give us a shout

i made one once it was awsom till i hit a dead branch and snap there went 2 weeks of grinding:mad:
cus i thought i could just weld up the whole turns out that was a mistake

on the other hand you could put the edge on the outer side of the steel and grind a pre curve till the whole is gone if your making a katana like i did.

oh and for get about grinding all those rust spots out its just a wast of time they never end!!

just heat and beat till eye ball straight and let it stay in the fire till the day after so its annealed. if your going to use a hand grinder make sure its a dewalt or of simmular high quality or youll be back at the store buying another one when its all said and done.

and stock up on the grinding discs. and cut off wheels to cut to shape

when you heat treat it youll want to coat the spine in fire place cement
lowes has some over in seasonal isle for about 7 bucks
if you dont have lowes try home depo
atwoods just laughed at me.

sorry no pics of my failed leaf spring katanna but it didnt last that long

i think annealling would be a good idea, trying to beat on that spring without it is going to do several things.

you and your budies will beat your selves senseless ( oops... to late. hes got a fire started.) and probably brake the floor.

if you manage to bang it flat you have just changed your temper by work hardening one side. work hardening tends to make a piece more brittle due to stress facters

if you want it to be able to chop a tree linb, and thats always fun, you will want the strength of a forged sword with a proper spring temper, you dont want to put "how many hours work" for "how many whacks"?( weve got a nice bed of coals going)

Thanks for the fast responses,my leaf springs have there holes not in the middle. but my cousin uses the hole in the center and makes it part of a full tang handle then he welded a patch over it, also he has a katana that goes to the side of the hole and uses it for a finger hole like this __________________(_O_____
__________________(________ but curved and

__________________(_________
__________________(_O____O__ and those holes are patched
