How to order a custom?

Hi there.

I am like all of you infected with the HI virus which leads me to the point of buying one more. I already have a 18" AK but is now looking for a smaller one. The 18 incher is fantastic but a little bit to heavy for smaller work. Therefor I'm going to buy something smaller, like 15", with a certain type of wood in the handle and a full tang like the CAK.

So, I have a few questions. Which one is the best for the task and how do I order a custom one?

Something about 15" with a full tang and lighter than a 18" AK?

The first one to pop in my my head is one H.I. already has: the Chiruwa Ang Khola, of which the standard is 16.5".

If you want to go shorter than that, perhaps a 15" Sirupati or Chitlangi with a Chiruwa (full tang) handle.

Keep in mind that a 15" khukuri with a chiruwa handle will probably weigh the same (if not more) than a 18" khukuri. I have a 23.75" Chiruwa Chitlangi which is heavier than my 26" standard handle Chitlangi.

A WWII is a good "lighter" option to the Ang Khola. Then there's the Chitlangi, the BAS, etc. Basically everything is lighter -- given equal lengths and handle design -- than the Ang Khola.

When ordering a custom you have to email Yangdu at the address Roger Smith posted anyway, so I'd email her the type wood you want, that you want a Chiruwa handle, and tell her what kind of work you want to do: i.e. exactly what it is that will be chopped mostly, climate, etc and let her advise you on the type kukri that will most likely fill your needs. Gotta remember, she grew up around these things, around people that use them daily, and has gotten a lot of feedback over the years from people who have ordered. She'll be able to give you the best advice.

ETA: She's still in Nepal AFAIK, so don't be disturbed if you don't get a fast response.
Also, I don't know if anyone has the keys to the shed (Ted?), or if Ted was given a few blades to sell as DOTDs, but you might want to email Ted (or post here) and someone can look and see if there's a short kukri with a Chiruwa handle that would fit the bill without a custom order?

Everybody,

I promised a review on the HI SABER that was offered a while back...and I have not done a good job of following up.

So...as I said I was on patrol...ppassing by the house and I saw the traingular box...so I had to stop and put the box inside the house...which of course obligated me to open it...(NO BRAINER)

THE fist thing I did...once I was able to close my mouth (It is a jaw dropper.)
was to thump the heel of my hand across the pommel....

My ears had a wonder to behold....

There was a deep, thrumming sound like tribal drums in the distance...it was the sort of soun d that re-verberates in the chest as well as the tympanic membrane....

BOM...BOM...BOM...

More than a sensual delight...I knew the sword was solid...no clicks or pins that might signal there was a problem with meeting of handle and blade.

I had no time to look over the carving.

The initial impression was ..."Here is a tool...made for battle....not for sitting on the shelf.

Whomever made this sword was not tinkering around with a new idea...just for the hell of it.

Everything that is there...is there for a reason. INcluding the carving on the handle...more on that later.

I'm interested in ordering some finished blades blades with full (chiruwa?) tangs so I can fit handles to my hand. (I re-handle most of my blades - haven't seen a real khukri yet). But I guess to get ahold of some HI blanks I'd have to wait several months for them to be made & then shipped from Nepal. I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for chiruwas with broken handles in the DOTDs.
