I collect knives and swords. I have some that over time have ended up with scratches on the blades. I am looking for suggestions on how to buff, and polish blades to clean them up.

This depends on how deep the scratches are and the finish that is on them now. Start with a block of hardwood . Then go get some sic carbide paper from the hardware or auto body supply. Start by dragging the paper towards you . If there deep you may have to go to a 240 grit or so. If not maybe a 320 or 400. You can use the paper wet or dry.. Keep pulling the paper untill the scratch is gone .
Then up to the next grit. Keep criss crossing the grits untill it all looks the same . If its a satin go to 600-800 or so..
If its a polish well I go to a 2000 grit then just a light buff with green chrome. Then semi chrome polish . And last the white bars compound for a mirror.. You have to use seperate buffs for each compound and they must be kept clean for other compound and dirt and dust. You can use a cheap grinder from a outlet store and buy the buffs from most big hardware chains or knife supply houses.
