How to preserve knife

HI all

how do u preserve knives and swords for an indefinite perid of time in the store? Heavily oil it? lightly oil or have some heavy duty grease on it.Also with or without their scabbards? what i tried last time was to put a cling wrap covered with oil over the blade. it works but its rather messy. and advice
