How to properly clean knives?

What I usually do is take apart the knife, wash everything with warm water and dish soap (someone on here recommended that) then I dry the blade and other parts, spray a towel with wd40 and give the blade and parts a wipe down. Then I oil the blade. I've only done this on cheap knives like my kershaw cryo, rat 1, and spyderco tenacious. But weirdly enough I'm starting to notice some slight surface rustvon my spyderco near the pivot area. I do not want to ruin my spyderco pm2 or ZT 0350.

So what is the right way to clean a folding knife?

If you're washing knives take a cue from the restaurant industry, wash it as hot as you can, the latent heat left over expedites the drying process leaving no moisture to hasten rusting...

1. Leave knife in jeans pocket.
2. Run through washing machine.
3. Swear and cuss.
4.Polish the hell out of it.
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 repeatedly.

Taking a knife apart to clean it is unnecessary, except in extreme cases.
Soap and hot water, towel dry, then a liberal spray of WD 40 to displace any residual moisture should suffice.

This. Usually I find out when the wife asks what the heck is that clunking noise coming from the dryer.

I rarely take it apart unless it's been in serious mud, or the buildup over time gets to THAT point!!

Soap and warm water.
I don't use anything but a soft cloth to wipe it dry. (Make sure I get all the water, If there are tight spots, I will use Q-tips.
Re-lube the pivot, and I am good to go...

WD 40 is specifically designed to displace water. Use it for it's intended purpose.
You can't get all the water out of most knives unless you use heat (or WD 40)!

I break down my knife once or twice a year.
But everyday it gets water and soap, that's it. I don't even dry it much, just a quick shake and some air.
Luckily it's dry where I live.

I would never use wd40, only because I cut food sometimes.
