How to put a hamon on a blade.

I look on this website and see all kinds of beautiful knives with hamon on them. How do you put a hamon on a blade and is it very hard to do. I make some knives out of railroad spikes and band saw blades and files. Would it work on those steel types. What materials would be needed to complete this project? Any help would be appreciated.
