Let's say my AK Bowie has a few scratches from normal use, let's say I want to bring it back to a mirror finish. What is the process used to get a knife blade to a mirror finish? How do the kamis do it?

kamis = buffer with compound.

You can get some decent polishing/cleaning with Flitz or Simichrome polishing compound.

Dan's right; the only way I know to get it back to HI factory default is with a spiral sewn buff with Tripoli compound and a lot of polishing. Which I think is why you see so many of Dan's knives, esp. the HI conversions he does, with beautiful and functional satin finishes.

I keep mine nice and shiny, but once they get scratched up, they get a scotch-brite satin finish. It holds oil better anyway, and looks great.

Addendum: I realize this is technically incorrect. I use tripoli and a spiral buff all the time because it polishes wood, horn and brass, and shines up the steel. But for scratches or heavy scuffs though you are better served with white rouge on a loose or maybe a canton flannel buff. In any case, as I said I seldom use them as I prefer the satin finish...

Beside the scotch brite, ditto what Norm said. I use fine sandpaper, 400 or 600 grit.

The more you use them the more scratches and marrs will appears. You could go nuts trying to keep it mirror finished, and even the satin one will not take out the scratches unless you.....like whittling on your khukuri nightly.
