How to put the spring latch on a Spyderfly back on?

Not sure if this should go here, balisong, or spyderco so starting it here...

The spring latch on my spyderfly quit springing open so I removed it to inspect it. The wire spring still looks symmetrical and does not look damaged, so my guess is that somehow the spring just slipped out of place.

The problem is, I just can not figgure out how to get it back on again.

The latch and screw are easy enough to understand, but how in the world do you get the spring back in place again?

I know Spyderco will fix it for me, but being without it a few weeks will be the last resort.

Yes, thank you, I'm sure pictures would be helpful. Here they are, and I noticed in the last picture that the screw is going in upside down through latch.

Ah, yes, I see. Well, as far as I can tell, you need to have those straigt pins on the spring on the 'bottom' of the latch 'guide'. You can see the marks of those pins on your first picture (on the left handle).
You have to experiment a bit in which direction you have to turn them so there is tension on the latch.
Do NOT try to bend those pins! It will **** up the spring. Just push gently down on them so they rotate and tighten around the screw.

Hope this helps...

I understand, the spirals of the spring on each side need to be unwound so that they press against the inside of the recessed flat area of the handle.

How to achieve this is what I am not able to figgure out.

Not unwound, there needs to be tension on them when you put the latch back!

Uhm, look in the second pic, k ? Now, push down on those pins, so they rotate clockwise. That should tense them up.

Damn, I hate not being able to hold things in my hand :(

If you still can't figure it out, ask on the Spyderco forums here, or in the Balisong part.
Or, go to http://spyderco.com/forums/

I think what your are seeing as pins is actually the spring. It is a single piece of wire that starts with a coil on one side then goes up (down from the perspective in my pictures), across the latch, then down the other side ending in a second coil. When it rotates, it moves the latch.

The tension for rotating the latch is in the coils. The trick is to get the coils in place with tension once again.

Hey cmd. I think what the Z-man is getting at is to rotate the spring (pins) counterclockwise, to the 4 o'clock position. That should put tension on them and then place the latch back down inside the handle making sure the pins stay at 4 and then insert the screw. Of course I may be entirely wrong. I was one time! :D :p :)

Thank you, now I do understand. Zwaplat, you had it right from the start.

Thank you so much, both Zwaplat and artsig1!

(never fear exposing your ignorance, it is the only way to get rid of it)
