How to remove black from logo?

I'm wondering what Randall puts in the stamped logo, is it just paint? How can it be removed? One of mine is almost unreadable, it is so filled in.

It's carbon residue from the forging process, there's a technical term for it, slag I think. It's left there, not put there.
