What's the best way to remove the black baked-on coating found on Cold Steel's machetes? I just want to polish the blade to a high shine. I tried paint stripper, which did nothing. I tried rubbing alcohol; nothing. Should I just run an orbital hand sander over it until the blade is bare?

Try bead blasting. I had a carbon v SRK that I bead blasted about 6 years ago that looked really nice.

I used an orbital palm sander and started with 80-grit sandpaper. Worked my way down until I could use simichrome polish. Looks good now.

You may also want to get a spray can of Aircraft Remover. It's wicked an will burn your skin so be careful, but it will take paint/finish off of ANYTHING metal. It's 7 or 10 bucks at Auto Zone. Comes in a spray, or in a gallon can.

I second that statement. I've used it on everything from bike frames to knives and it usually works great. Having said that, I tried taking the black finish off a cheap FB Karambit and it didn't put a dent in it. It may have been a can I had in the garage for a while so maybe the stuff was old. But I think you should try it.

I'll try that, thanks.

Here are two Cold Steel Kukris (one normal, one Magnum) that I used an orbital palm sander on. 100 grit, then 150, then by hand with a 200. Then an 800 emery cloth by hand, ands finally a coating of simichrome polish. They're still not mirror polished, but I like them a lot better than before.

I sanded, then wrapped the handles in athletic tape for a less blister-prone grip...
