how to remove heat treat "burns" ?

I have a hand made knife which I very much love. However, there are visible heat treating marks on the jimping which I would like to get rid of. I know I can sand them out, but that has proven much more time consuming than I imagined. Is there some kind of chemical I can use to get those marks off?
