I added some pictures to the media section, thinking that’s how one made pictures available to see in a thread. Then as I created the post, I discovered I inserted the images directly during post creation. So to try to clean up the redundancy I went to media to delete the pictures, but cannot find that functionality? How does one delete media?

Unfortunately you can’t. Only Spark or a Super Mod can do it for you.

Something within the new settings prevents us being able to do it ourself.

If I understand it correctly, a Super Mod can "delete it", but that just marks the entry such that regular members cannot see a picture. But once uploaded, a picture cannot be completely removed.

BF is a database. Databases don't react well to having data removed. So nothing is ever totally deleted. The entry (post or media) is is just flagged to adjust viewing permissions.
