I have a Western/Coleman W49 J bowie that was never used or sharpened. From it laying in the case with the leather sheath laying on the handle I have a patina on the handle where the brass is. How can I remove this without damaging the wood on the handle.

Polish it out with just about any metal polish, simple really.

^^This, in a nutshell. On brass especially, it'll clean up quickly. You might put some masking tape or painter's tape over the wood, just to keep the dirty residue from the brass-polishing from being rubbed into the grain of the wood.

Brasso metal polish might be a little bit gentler than say Flitz, it's worth a try in any case. Some folks advise against storing a knife in a leather sheath as it can accelerate the oxidation process.

I have an old Western fixed blade (L48A) with a stacked leather handle, and it had quite a bit of verdigris (green corrosion) on every bit of brass that came into contact with the sheath, including the brass guard, and on the brass fittings (rivets & snap) of the sheath. It was given to me 40+ years ago, and spent years stored in the sheath. Lesson learned the hard way...

I does clean up easily from the brass, though. But it also stains the leather a bit.
