What can I use to remove rust spots from a knife? Also, I live in India so I don't have access to the typical products available at Home Depot. What should I be looking for?

Thanks...

Is it a work knife that will get scratched up or a decoration knife that hangs on the wall or a sentimental/historical knife from a war?

Like zenheretic says - how critical is the final finish?

Also what steel is the knife made from and how bad is the rust?

Light surface rust is no biggie but if deeply pitted then you might have to live with the damage

They're work knives. I know they'll get scratched up and have some rust...but still.. I'd like to keep some of the rust off if possible. The climate here is REALLY humid. I'd like to keep them from getting pitted.

You can spray the blade with WD-40 and rub off light surface rust with Scotchbright or similar scrubbing pad, but I don't know if you might have access to such stuff. At a minimum, you can coat the blade with a light oil from time to time, which may slow or stop the progression of additional rust. Wiping the blades daily with an oily rag might do the trick.

Since they are work knives use a steel wool pad to remove most of it and then coat with a thin layer of oil to help prevent further rust.

Thanks guys. Now this may sound like a stupid question..but when you say to wipe it down or coat it with oil.. what type of oil are you referring to?

Well, I don't know what you have access to. Sewing machine oil, wd40, gun oil. Does India have hardware stores?

Maybe someone wil chime in when folks get there bearings this morning.

Also specify if these are fixed blades or folders.

Hmm... I'll have to check and see what I can find. I'm not aware of any hardware stores. Also it's for both..fixed and folder. I have one of each and more on the way (as long as customs doesn't steal them again!)

Hi,

To remove the rust, anything abrasive will work. Heck, even a handful of beach sand will do the job. Naval Jelly does wonders to remove rust.

To prevent rust, in a pinch animal fats, (if you aren't Hindu), vegetable oils, or mineral oil will work and are food safe. Candle wax will also work. Or even used motor oil, (for non food use only!) works.

Just be creative!
