What is the best way to dull a shiny blade?

Use it or stonewash it. If you have acess to sand blasting equipment, you could bead blast it too.

Scotchbrite pad? Any more details on what kind of knife it is or what you mean by dull? Matt, tumbled, etc.. all different finishes.

I would parkerize or blue the sum bitch.

Take a few gravels and rocks(fish tank stones work) and throw them inside an empty plastic peanut butter jar or milk jug. Take the blade and put in with the gravel and rocks. Pour a little oil(WD-40, honing oil, motor oil, any oil) just to lube up the rocks. Tape it up really good. Throw the jar/jug in the dryer on the lowest setting possible and let it run for as long as you need(till you like the finish).
