I have a lot of Kershaws and Zero Tolerance knives with Tungsten DLC coating. Does anyone know what chemical will remove this. I would like to try something other than abrasives. I just want to see the steel, not polish it.

That's going to be some elbow greases. Being a diamond Like carbon, its incredibly hard and nearly noble, so nothing that won't destroy the blade will take it off.

I'm not sure that any chemical will remove the Tungsten DLC coating. It's an inorganic coating applied by chemical vapor deposition in a vacuum chamber. If there is some acid or such that would remove it, I greatly doubt that you could do so without damaging the blade.

You might contact Bodycote and see what they say. It's their coating. Maybe they know how to remove it safely.

Wow, thank you both. At least I don't think I'm an idiot any longer. I'll see what Bodycote says. Again, thanks.

ive got some stuff called aircraft paint remover you might want to try that but watch out it burns your hands if you get it on them i use a paper towel to apply it

Did you realize that this thread is over five years old?
