How to repair these machetes?

Hello,

I have inherited 2 beautiful machetes. One of them was actually used in Africa during the 60s.
However, they are in a bad shape with dents and a great deal of rust, as you can see in the photo.
What would be the best approach to repair them?
Can I do it myself or should I seek professional help?

Or are they beyond repair?

Thanks!

my guess would be with a little wd40 and some sand paper the rust should come off easily enough. you may need to let them soak for a while. as for sharpening i would recommend starting with a file and using light pressure then whatever sort of stone you prefer, i bet they'll look great when you get done and you shouldn't have much trouble at all doing the work yourself if you take your time

Yeah, as far as machetes go they look to be in pretty good shape. Oil and wet/dry sandpaper to clean them up, a fine mill file and an oil stone to sharpen them back up. A little steel wool and oil (maybe some sandpaper) an the grips should clean up very well too. Nice inheritance!

Edit to add: they might be beyond repair - I could get rid of them for you...:D

If you put the money or already have a few quality sharpening stones you can fix the edge esily, it'll just take some time and love to fix up those edges.

As for the rust I'd get some wet/dry sand paper and some nice oil/compounds and rub that sucker to a polish.

Good luck!

I'd go with WD40 and some 000 steel wool.
Sharpen with a file...
