how to reshape a handle

I have a great knife which would be better if I could thin the handle somewhat
it is ma full tang and the micarta scales are pinned, and it haS A SINGLE GUARD
i WOULD LIKE TO REDUCE OR FLATTEN THEN SCALES BY ABOUT 1/8 INCH ON EACH SIDE, YET DONT HAVE A BELT SANDER
ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW TO PROCEED

Files and sandpaper and some patience.

After thinning, you will probably have to re pin the scales, as you will cut through the flare of the pin heads.

I've been procrastinating doing a similar thing and for much the same reason. If you go ahead and work on your handle perhaps you could let us know how it went and maybe post a pic or two. Good luck!! Hope it turns out for you.:thumbup:
