How to restore a black parkerized finish???

Hi everybody,

A while ago I have exposed the tang of one of my knives in order to turn it into some sort of hammer butt (cut the micarta slabs of the handle shorter).
I like the overall result but, in doing so I have removed all the black parkerized finish in the area and now the white metal sticks out like an eye-sore. Is there anything out there that can be used to touch up this kind of finish?

Thanks in advance for advice,

Fausto

Are you sure it is parkerized ( manganese phosphate or zinc phosphate) ? Anyway here we have "cold bluing " solutions used for firearms which is about the only thing you could do.

I have a lot of guns with parkerized finishes. I've never heard of parkerize (manganese phosphate) finish being put onto a specific "spot". You can re-parkerize the whole thing at home without much trouble. Just buy a re-park kit, But I think you basically have to boil the whole thing in a chemical solution and I'm not sure how your knife handle would take that. Most people touch-up park with dab-on cold bluing solutions http://www.rb-treasures.com/MPI_Products/VanBlue.html, which isn't perfect but turns the spot a little darker anyway.

Thanks guys,
Will try some cold blueing, if not good will remove all the parkerization and re-finish everything with the cold blueing or make it satin finished (lesson learned for the next time).

I agree that a spot parkerization would not be the best answer. If I recall you have to boil it in sulfuric acid or some such witches brew. I have found that a little Ferric Chloride brushed on matches the parkerization on rifles a little better than cold blue.

Unfortunately, it is a black finish. I doubt if any parkerizing kit will give you that.
Why not try the Ferric Chloride, as mentioned above. That will give you a rough surface in the area to be touched up. You can match it to the rest of the knife with flat black spray paint, or black spray on teflon.
