how to`s on damascus patterns

What patterns are you looking for? Try to find one of Jim Hrisoulas' books about pattern welding. There is a bunch of insight there.

If you have some experience with making damascus...then I would suggest Jd Smith's video.....

Kim Breed, Gary Wheeler, and I will be coming out with some dvd videos in the future...no idea as to when.... We kinda got tired of steps that we thought was important being left out with other availlable information...

What kind of pattern are you looking to do? maybe I can help?

I was wondering how deep to cut the groves for ladder pattern The same for raindrop. Thanks Robert Ps Ihave made it before but just wanted a new out look and to see if I was doing it right.

For the ladder pattern, I usually grind the grooves to about 33% of the billet thickness and alternate centers from one side of the billet to the other.

I don't know about the rain drop pattern since I have never done that one. I would think it would be about the same, but you might also want to vary the depth of the holes for that pattern.

Hope that helps.

For the ladder, I will usually try to go about 25% of the thickness of the billet and try to keep them very close. I don't do any stretching after they are flattened. On the raindrop, I do like Laredo does, vary the depth and I usually will use different size bits. I would go about a 1/3 of the billet on the raindrop and the pattern will depend a little on the number of layers in the billet. I try to put as many rain drops as I can on the billet.

For ladder go 1/3 of the way thru billet and alternate on other side. Billets are 3/8 inch thick. Raindrop is holes equil spacing and 1/3 deep. pools and eyes (thats big and small circles) vary depth and size of bits.
