I own a 110 that has Pete's Stag for handles that I would like to re-shape
a bit. First let me say there is nothing wrong with the knife I simply would like
to re-shape (flatten) the stag so that the overall profile is more along the lines of
the regular finger groove model in width. The stag as installed is to round and
uneven to fit my hand just right.

So I want to "file" it slowly flat but am unsure of how to work stag. I know what
I want to do will upset the stag fan ,but please undrstand I like stag too just not
so "lumpy" and thick. Any help or advice on what I'l ge into would be welcome.

Contact the people at Buck and see if they can do it for you, no sense in ruining it.

Jake, this knife has been back to Buck already and it still isn't just right.
While I may seem like a barbarian for wanting to change the stag that
isn't it at all. I simply want to use this knife and see no reason not to
have it "my way". I've seen stag worked down to where there is little
of the rough outside left and think that smooth white color and feel is
simply grand. Buck can't do what I want from a distance.

I was hoping I could get a answer from Joe or someone who has actually
worked with stag. I need info on how to plane the side more flat and smooth.
Anyone.........???

Either way thank's for your reply.

Hi Tightwad,

You might want to try over in Shop Talk in the General forums. I'm sure there are a few people there that have worked stag and would be able to tell you what is necessary to shape it yourself.

Hope this helps,

TightWad,

I have customized a few bone and stag handles.
What you need to start with if you are taking
off a lot of material is a small crosscut file.
Don't use that 12" one that you sharpen the
lawnmower with. Get one about 6 to 8 inches.

Carefully use masking tape to cover the bolsters
with 2 layers. If you have a good soft way
to mount it in a vice, do. If not enlist help
to hold the knife while you remove material.
Take material off slowly. If you are on a round
area of the handle, don't over cut and end up
with flat spots. Watch your file angles so you
don't hit the bolsters with the tang end that
is out of your site!

If you aren't taking too much material off you can
start with a rather fine single cut file.
After the files. Change to about 200 grit sandpaper,
worked by hand, not block. Finish with 500 thru 1200
wet dry paper.

Be sure and leave some of that pretty bark!

One a diff. subject: I won the bid on that
Camillus CCC4 .257 Roberts on ebay and
am eagerly awaiting its arrival.
Thanks a lot for the tip!!!

Warhawk, Rebus, thank's a million for tips. I've wanted to
"customize" this knife (a 54th birthday present 2 yrs ago)
since I got it. Just couldn't get up enough nerve to "whittle'
on it because it's so grand looking.

Well I ain't gettin' any younger and my wife keeps askin' what's
wrong with her present so I'm gonna enjoy it while I'm here & alive.
Win, loose or draw it goes under the file this week...........

Rebus , glad you got the CCC4 . You may find as I did that it will
need sharpend if you're going to use it. It was offered as a collectors
knife and I found them to be a bit dull so the collector can show it
and not cut everybody who sees it. Mine took a nice edge in no time
on the stones.

Glad I could be of some help, Tightwad. I've got about 40 different 110's in the collection so far, and have to severely restrain myself from using them. One of these days I'll get two of the same from Pete's so I'll have one nice 110 in the display and one on my belt. :)

A couple thoughts: If you have a vice but no good way to clamp the knife in without damaging it, get either a small radiator hose or large diameter heater hose (depending on your vice's jaw size) and cut it in half. Slip a half on each side of the vice jaws and you're all set. Just don't tighten it too much. Also, open the knife and tape up the edge and point and clamp it in the vice opened. Place a thick towel under the knife and over the vice screw just in case it slips out. You can never be too careful with one of your babies, especially one from your wife. ;)
