How to Shark your Deals from the DOTD...

So just to be CLEAR. The DOD is when they make a post that they have them. Then first come? If I like the knife I would want to miss out in the future deals:D
This gets asked a lot by new members so I thought it might be nice to go ahead and make a thread about it. Maybe it will even be good enough to be sticky material, though it is clear no one reads them. (I would like to note that I did when I first signed up but still had a number of questions) So here we go:
=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=
As one of the most successful sharks here, let me give you a few pointers...

First off, email Yangdu directly at HIMIMP@aol.com rather than sending one via Blade Forums. It is 1st come, 1st served so if you go through the board, your email is sometimes delayed or lost. Send it directly and save yourself the trouble.

Also folks and I should address this to all of you, AOL has an odd way of doing email. They buffer EVERYTHING there so instead of email being instant like in the rest of the internet, it can take up to an hour for an email to get to a person on AOL. My parents use and have used AOL now since AOL was and it has been one of the big frustrations for them. There is no reason to explain why they don't change but they have a good reason so let's not ask, OK? ANYWAY, this is why Auntie is often not able to determine who has won the close ones rapidly and we all wind up waiting up to an hour or so to see if we got it or not. AOL is great for folks who are on the go and need to remain mobile, so while it has a lot of oddness to it, it also has a number of good reasons to be chosen (just not by me). ;)

I mention all of this to say, BE PATIENT after you have emailed and do not barrage her with a hundred other emails asking if you got it. She WILL let you know, she always does one way or the other so just wait and be patient.

Yangdu is in Reno, Nevada, USA and normally posts the DOTD's at around Noon her time. Figure out what time that is your time and be here for the post of forget about winning. If you aren't here, I will win. :D You can tell if she is here by looking at the bottom of the forum to see who all is here. Of you see her, get on your marks and start reloading the page now and then but DO NOT OVERLOAD THE SERVER BY HITTING RELOAD EVERY SECOND. There is always going to be another knife but if Spark feel the place is being abused, there is NOT another Blade Forums. Respect the board and its server load.

EMAIL FIRST, then kindly post what you have attempted to purchase in the thread to save us all the trouble and frustration of trying to get it as well. This second part is by no means a rule (in fact none of this is) but it is one way we can all show a little bit of cordiality to one another. Or, as I put it before, there are "Stealth Sharks" and "Gentleman Sharks", don't be a Stealth Shark please. It doesn't take much effort to be nice so why not do it and save somebody so grief later? No doubt, when the "chum" hits the "water" here, it is kill or be killed. Get in, get what you want or get lost. :) Once you have sent the email though, your frenzy should be past you, so take a moment and post what you've sharked please.

There are many other tips and tricks on how to enhance your odds. These I will leave to my fellow sharks to post since they all do about the same as I do. Plus it is also nice to hear from the "Phone" folks and hear how they over come having to beat those of us with full sized keyboards in front of us. This way we can get all those tips and tricks together in one place rather than reposting them in a hundred DOTD threads. Maybe one day when I get a membership and can have a signature, I will even make it a link there to boot. :) So let's make this a great thread and try to avoid too much drift, OK? :p

I always use this exact template for sending Auntie an email:

Email name is the DOTD date# and name of the khuk you want to buy.

Hi Yangdu,

I'd like to buy the (insert model name and price). Name and address as follows:

(name)
(address)

Cheers,

Leo

If you're sharking properly (i.e. the moment the chum hits the water), you should receive a reply within a few minutes.

In a perfect world, this is indeed true.

Truly AOL can be a source of delays for the reply, which is why I said what I did. The worst part of it is you never know, sometimes it will snap right through and another time, even a few seconds later, it will be buffered instead. Now don't loos hope friends, the time-stamp will prove out for you so in he end t all comes out in the wash. :)

...

I forgot all about telling folks that you can save time by queuing up a draft that only needs you to copy/paste the details of the blade info and then just hit "send". Doing this one can actually make the difference on those one of a kind blades where everyone is shooting of mail at once plus it would no doubt be a must do for our "phone" sharks to help over come the inherent handicap of the tiny keyboards...

Also, in the template above, mention how you intend to pay.

Another tip is to keep a close look at your finances. Know in advance, how much you can spend. I was out-sharked once by two minutes because I was figuring out if I could afford something.

I've tried setting up a google alert to catch the DoD thread when it first gets posted, but it hasn't seemed to work at all. Anyone know how to do this?

I think Yangdu only posts the "SOLD" mark after receiving a payment, before that... there isn't another way to know for sure.

So please, DO Post that you have attempted to shark something. It put's the rest of us at ease and Yangdu won't be bombarded with too many emails for the same item, which in turn gets us a shorter responce time too.

Sometimes, I guess, if an payment doesn't go through then the next inline gets another chance.

1: Make sure you like and can afford what you see on the DOTD offerings (Deal Of The Day)
2: Send email to Yangdu stating what you like and how you will pay.
Quick note: It helps to first read the DOTD tread and see if anyone hasn't already sharked the piece you like.
3: Post back for the envy of the rest of us:D AND to inform the rest of the "shark pack".
4: Wait for deal confirmation via email, then pay for your piece.
5: DO a review once you got it:thumbup:+ for our viewing pleasure and education

I think that's just about it.

A quick interjection here. This may not always apply, but on my first DOTD for the Chainpuri and later for a Malla I had emailed Yangdu about them and got a response that the Deal had sold but she had another for the same price - would I be interested. May take a while to get the stock levels up again but it never hurts to send an email for one you really want.

Indeed! This is how I got my wonderful ASTK-V.
I would say it is always worth a try...
Shoot her an email and see if you might get lucky.

are all Deal of The Days blemished khukuris? or are they just deals?

Both. Many are what Yangdu calls a blemished khuk, yet on the ones I've gotten, I had to look hard to find the blemish. Others are just what it says, a Deal of the Day. Yangdu will say, in the post, if it is a blemished khuk.

do a search, it has all been posted. my back hurts far too much to drag all that stuff out into the sunlight again.

I store them all of the place on the floor of my house in piles with the rest of my machetes and other stuff.
Once a year everything gets a Flitz and a Ren Wax and the rust stays away.

Dedication people. I don't think I'd have the patience to maintain such a large collection of knives like that. I can't even maintain my paltry slipjoint collection properly, let alone a boatload of khukuris.

Sorry to disappoint folks, I am just not really in shape to pull them all out again just yet. Sorry.

I really do just have them laying around the floor all over the place and once a year I really do Flitz then Renaissance Wax them all.
This is really how I store them and care for them.

The horn handles get a dip in some Neatsfoot and the wood is usually fine with just the rewaxing (if not a bit of BLO moistens it up).
IF the scabbard or sheath leather starts showing signs of drying, then this to gets a drink of Neatsfoot.

Honestly, I have darn near begged to see collection shots of even one or two blade sized collections and I seem to be one of about four that post pix of this sort period. I know there are a few people with more than one or two khuks/blades/swords/whatever in their collection but this seems to be too much to ask. Sorry to be cranky about it but before I do another "Group Shot", I am gonna need to see a lot more of everyone else's collections first. BUT DO IT IN A DIFFERENT THREAD! ;)
