I am not that good at sharpening, so after I used my bk 9, how do you sharpen such a big blade, with what? I was assuming a butcher's steel or a longer whet stone and just work my way up the edge. Ideas?

what are you planning on using the knife for? if you are going to do any chopping with the knife, a convex edge might work better since it would be easier to maintain. to maintain the v edge you can use some 3m wetordry sandpaper on a piece of glass.

you can also get a set of paper wheels and sharpen it in a few minutes compared to doing it by hand which might take several minutes or even longer. a convex edge can be put on with some wetordry sandpaper on a soft backing or a phone book. a mousepad to me is too soft. a table placemat is a good backing pad. contact me if you want some help in sharpening your knife and i'll be glad to help you. rje196021@gmail.com

I like a guide system, Lansky or DMT make a good one, also, check out a book written by Steve Bottorff, called Sharpening made easy, it cost me $.50 at a used book store and is quick easy read on sharpening anything. Its worth a look. Thanks to all. Moose

Learning to Sharpen your own knives will save you money in the long run.
By a decent system and learn to use it.

I used the lansky system just last week to sharpen my BK9. It worked out quite well. Now the BK9 has a nice mirror polish 20 degree bevel.

Sharp, durable, and looks good. :D

God I love my BECKERS!!!!!!

The carbon steel in a BK-9 works well with simple stones. You can do a pretty decent job with a cheapo Norton dual sided stone from Home Depot or the hardware store. Hold the knife down against the table, and rub the stone up and down over the edge, working your way up and down it.

That will give you something of an edge, then a blue or brown crock stick can make it a little better.

Thanks everyone. I will let you know which I try, and what eventually works for me. Appreciate the help. Beckers rule!
