For anybody who wants a nata, here is how I was taught to sharpen a single-grind knife.
Use a watered stone.
Soak it (the stone) in water for at least five minutes prior to use.
Using your fingertips to maintain edge contact with the stone, move the blade across the stone at a diagonal angle but edge parallel to the stone.
Do it 3 times on the flat side for every 10 times on the beveled side.

Dude,
I am selling my Norihide.
I went to sword class the other night and Someya Sensei pulls out an odachi, brand new, beautiful and just my size.
The blade is 36 inches long, about 2.25 inches wide at the base.
Oh man, I told him id buy it on the spot.
I could cut a horse in half with that sword!
I will send picks when I get it home.
I think I will get all the details worked out and receive the sword inside of two weeks, if everything goes well.

A real, handmade odachi, it is frewaking awesome.

yes, i said frewaking.

anyway, we are having taikai this week, so i have been busy.
obviously, when i was late in asking uncle bill to sell me the rod allen hanshee prototype!

the video is on hold for a week, but then i will start shooting again.
I hope the MWKK is an outstanding day of fun.

Wow! Really...:D I'm sure it t soutta my price range. The O-dachi is a fearsoem weapon, the great sword of Asia. with a 36 inch blade, what is the handle length? 12-18 inches or more? Total length?

I gotsta see pix!

She is in shirasaya right now, but i will have her fitted with a 13 inch handle.
(shinden fudo ryu style)
honest to god, i saw that sword and everybody in the dojo saw my face turn strange, like a man who sees a UFO.
They all knew instantly that it would be mine.
Everybody.
I am a big guy and my katana is actually made for a smaller person than average.
When I held that odachi, everybody in the dojo was smiling and saying "thats the one!"

Oh lady luck is fellating me these last few months!

Somebody ordered a genuine japanese nata from me, i am shipping it today, but i would be interested to hear their comparison with a similarly sized HI khukuri.
The one I am shipping is about 15 inches long overall.

Congrats, Danny. I've been wanting a Shinden Fudo Ryu style blade for a while now (which is actually kinda funny, since I'm a hobbit- but then, my bo weighs over four lbs!).

Never forget that happiness is not something that can be found by searching for it, but rather, comes as a byproduct of pursuing what we find important.

Are we all still on planet earth?!?

I'm am so lost on this thread...

that must feel kinda good:D

A 13-incher will be plenty of handle. should get it into the 50-inch range, or pretty near.
