how to sharpen ?? dos and donts

ok i recently gota spyderco military, crkt kiss in the dark, and a griptillian

what iwant to know is whats a good sharpening stone, to use andright way to sharpen it, any online guide ? i have never owned a knife or ever sharpened one ,i know ,strange heh ,lol ,any advice ??

Practice, practice, practice. The sharpening FAQ listed above is a great place to start learning about sharpening.

I sharpen freehand on a variety of stones, but that takes time and effort to learn to do well. Many people love devices like the Spyderco Sharpmaker which helps keep a constant angle while sharpening. I would recommend that you start with a device like that before trying to sharpen freehand with a stone. That can be very frustrating for beginners who often find they make their knives duller instead of sharper.
