How to sharpen my Endura?

Purchased an Endura 4 (plain edge) last month and after some moderate use I've been trying to touchup the edge on my Sharpmaker. So far I'm not having very good luck.

This is my first VG-10 blade and it just doesn't seem to be responding the way my other knives do, S30V, 440A, Sandvik 13C26, etc. I'm using the 40 degree setting which works so well on my other knives but it's just not getting back to even the factory edge. I've cleaned my sticks and marked the edge of the blade with a marker but it's still not getting there.

Is it just the VG-10 steel (harder than what I'm used to) or does Spyderco use a different angle and I'm just not catching it?

TIA

Thanks for the link. If at all possible I'd like to be able to keep using my Sharpmaker which works fantastic on eveything else. Maybe I'm just not giving it enough time?

i used to sharpen by hand and some knives can take a long time to sharpen. that vg-10 is some hard stuff.

No way you should be having trouble with VG-10. Start with the brown corners at 40 degrees and do twenty strokes a side, progressing to brown flats, then white corners.

Also check you're edge with a sharpie, wipe it down the edge and then sharpen. If it's removing the black sharpie mark all the way to the edge you're doing it right, otherwise you're messing something up. Make sure the knife is vertical and the Sharpmaker is on a flat surface.

take a marker and color the edge now make a few passes on the SM and see where you are hitting on the edge.Is it plain edge?If yes than you should be using the 30 setting.

As I mentioned it is a plain edge and I've used the marker. Perhaps I'm just not working it long enough? I've used the 40 degree setting for all my Kershaw and Benchmades as well as others.

Rycen,

The plain edge requires a 30 degree and not 40?

30 deg may not reach the edge. That depends on what factory angle it came with. Most of my Delicas/enduras are fine with 30 deg on the left side but I touch only the shoulder on the right side.

If you are positive that you are in fact sharpening (read: touching the very edge) on BOTH sides and not rebevelling your knife (ensuring that using the magic marker trick) on one side or both, you will eventually get a sharp knife. Just make sure that you are hoplding the knife correctly (=upright) during the whole sharpening process and don't use to much pressure.

Good luck!

If you are trying to keep what the factory did it should be closer to the 30 than the 40.

The 30 degree side of the Sharpmaker is designed for back beveling or thinning the edge, and the 40 degree for the edge or micro bevel. Some steels can hold a 30 degree primary cutting edge well or thinner, but that turns into a personal preference.
