How to Sharpen Talonite????

Eye,
I've been using TALONITE pretty heavy for about 10 months, and it still makes me chuckle how easy it is to re-sharpen.

All I use is either a Sharpmaker with the 'white' sticks, or the 'white' bench stone from Spyderco. I like the new version of the Sharpmaker, and use the 30' bevel 'settings' and get great results on my Simonich CETAN/QUEST prototype. Works great and even my father can sharpen his talonite blade. NOW THAT IS A MIRICALE!

Marion,
I just finished my first two Talonite knives. The pictures will be on my website tomorow.
I found that once I got the knife sharp initially, it stayed that way through several long sessions of cardboard cutting!! It WAS easy to resharpen. I used a fine, new, DMT hand stone with water. This brought the edge back very quickly. I wouldnt' want to sharpen a Talonite blade that had become VERY dull without my "moving belts"!!
I have both knives scary sharp now but I still have some other methods to try with this material in the future. To me, the Talonite can feel dull with my thumb yet shave hair with ease! I will admit, I just have to work with it a little more!

Talonite is funny like that. When I first got my Cetan from Rob, Bob(Bald1) told me to hold off sharpening and see how it held up. It was difficult but I did as he asked; same as you describe - blade seems dull to thumb, but STILL cuts like crazy. And that was some time ago, I got the Cetan in June 99, I've only touched up on the Sharpmaker once since then and it still cuts and cuts and cuts...
OK I stole that from the "bunny" but it's true.

So Lynn, when are you going to post a picture of that Talonite Texan? Or have you already? I haven't had a chance to go look yet.

Lynn,
I LIKE the shape of the Texan! One in Talonite would be an awesome knife. I think Stag on the Texan would be rather fitting also. That's it a Talonite Texan with a stag handle........I better go

Nice work Neil! I liked both the Talonite pieces shown, the stag handle looks cool! What were the dimensions on the utility model? I didn't check, but it looked a bit larger than the hunter.TIA

Nice work Neil. Congratulations. Glad to see you and Lynn continuing to try new stuff and experiment.

SHARPEN Talonite (r)? I didn't know you had to sharpen the stuff!! My daughter says she used her Talonite (r) Wambli with fossil mammoth ivory scales for wallpapering, and it still cuts just fine.

All my knives, Talonite (r) and otherwise, of course, reside in my humidity controlled sock drawer wrapped in Tuf-Cloths. Except for the Kit Carson Talonite (r)large U-2 dive knife that, in a moment of weakness (some would say psychosis), I sent to Mike Turber to test.

Eye,

I'm with Will and Brian....I use Spyderco ceramic bench stones, the double stuff, or the Sharpmaker. A few strokes and wow! Now I will admit to a home made leather strop with green knifemaker's rogue being used a few times too... wicked sharp

!

Bottomline is the stuff is pretty easy to maintain. The trick is getting used to when it needs a touch up as it'll feel dull long before it actually becomes dull.

What exactly does "feels dull" mean? Is this no bite when you run your thumb across the edge?

As for high cutting performance even when the blade feels this way, is this push cutting or slicing or both?

-Cliff

Cliff,
That is what I mean by feels dull. Just feels dull to the thumb. No real bite there. The knife is going to a customer in Germany, so I don't want to do any serious cutting with it (well I want to, but won't), but it slices paper (draw type cut well). I am looking forward to seeing how the customer likes it. I think he plans to post a full report on My Forum after he uses the knife.

I have seen blades feel that way and still push cut well, but they were very poor slicers. It is very odd the first time you see it. The blade will even shave but has trouble even cutting up a roll of fabric let alone say hard poly rope. It usually is a sign that the edge needs to be reground as it is too worn.
