Have It Use Don't Abuse It.

best way for a newbie (me included) to sharpen a knife is using a spyderco sharpmaker they are pretty foolproo but I am goin gto get a lansky sometime cause I have heard it is even MORE dummy proof =)

With out a doubt the best way is a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204.
Susan--I was a Lansky (four hone diamond with extra fine added)guy before Igot my and the 204 works better

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

I hear a lot of good about the Sharpmaker. I've never used one.

I do use a Gatco Edgemate system, very similar to the Lansky. I like my Gatco. It works very well. I like the different angle selections. This allows you to trade off sharpness against durability.

A friend of mine dropped by a few weeks ago with six M16 bayonets that he's bought at a surplus place. They're used and were pretty dull and had a lot of chips and other edge problems. He offered me one if I'd sharpen all of 'em. Well, like a fool, I took the deal. It took a couple of hours to sharpen all six of 'em including the swedges. I had to start with the extra course stone just to just to straighten the edges out and get past the majority of the chips. But, when I was done with the extra fine hone, I had six bayonets you could shave with. Needless to say, I selected the best one and carefully handed the other five back. Eventually, I'm sure this ugly black thing will find its way into my tool box or something. But, right now, the edge is so nice I've been using it as a kitchen knife for fine slicing.

I'll toss in another promotion for the sharpmaker. Easy to use and very versatile. Hmm . . . I really should finish up redoing the bevels on that 710 soon . . .
