Made a handle for my ALICE pack. Very easy to do, and makes handling the pack much easier.

I took a piece of 1/2" pvc, and cut it off around 4 1/4". I lightly sanded the ends, to knock the sharp edges off.

I then painted it with this Krylon camouflage Fusion paint:

I took a piece of coat hanger, and fashioned it like this, so the hanger wouldn't touch the inside walls of the PVC, on the ends:

I also made a hook on the other end, so I could hang it up to dry:

As you can see, the hanger doesn't touch the insides, on the ends. I wanted to make sure I was able to get some paint on the inside. It worked very well:

Make sure not to make the loop on the end of the hanger too
tight, otherwise it will scrape the paint off while pulling it out, after it dries.

I then took a length of OD 550 paracord, about 23" long. Loop it through the upper portion of the ALICE pack frame:

Then put both ends through the PVC:

Place one end of the cord under the frame:

Tie a knot in the cord. In this case, I used a square knot:

Perhaps not a necessary step, but I took a lighter, and "welded" the knot:

Push the knot inside the PVC.

The finished product:

This is a very easy and fun project, and well worth the little time invested.

I braided a 550 strap onto my ALICE frame...it works LOL I just tied it on the strap tabs, then did a Cobra Knot handle.

Good idea. After getting the bag below and being very surprised at how much difference that bit of foam made that's my route now.

I carry a bit of that foam anyway because it is widely useful and light. I've got a bit off a windsurf that I use to ensure critical stuff can't sink, or to insulate, and most recently with the handle of one of those cheapo U-Dig-Me folding trowels poked through it to really help with rootling about in cold wet sand. I figure 50p worth of Hypalon on something from a fishing rod builders would do too.

Thanks guys. A handle sure makes a world of difference.

Great mod. And welding the knot with paracord is a VERY good idea. knots tend to slip in that material.

Thanks brother. Yes they do tend to slip. When I undid the mock up, the knot came out very easily.
