How to spend $300 at David Boye Knife Gallery? (w/pics)

Hi Folks,

As I mentioned at an earlier date, I was lucky enough to win the last Father's Day drawing at the David Boye Knife Gallery in Davenport (near Santa Cruz), California. I could come to the Gallery and pick out any knife or knives I wanted, with a 300 dollar credit to play with! WoooHooo!

I narrowed my choices down to three, but I just couldn't decide which one I wanted the most. I wanted a nice plain 3" Utility, that had a beautiful Ironwood handle, and spacers that were colored in a way that enhanced the joining of the brown wood and the silver blade. I would carry and use this knife... I also wanted a 3" Utility that had an etched blade. Although the spacers and the wood weren't as nice as the other Utility, the "Big Cat" engraving fit the blade "just right". I kept telling myself, "You have to have that!", even though I probably wouldn't use it much, which isn't really my style. And then the third item of desire, the most practical, was a 4" Basic, in Cobalt Dendritic Steel. No rusting where I live by the ocean is a big plus, and I found one with really nice grain and a beautiful blade shape, with a "unique" engraving on the blade.

So I bought all three! Since I had a 300 dollar credit, I decided to spend 600 dollars more! What do you think of them? What would you have done? Enjoy!! (Click on the preview image to access the full size picture.)

All three, as the sun comes out. An 3" etched blade fancy Utility, a 3" plain blade fancy Utility, and a 4" Basic in Cobalt Dendritic Steel. I am waiting for a "pouch" sheath for one of the fancy Utilities, so I'm one sheath short right now.

Detail of the two 3" fancy Utilities. They feature David's regular dendritic steel, Ironwood handles, with Mastodon ivory rings, and brass (or copper) and steel ring spacers. I really like how the "Big Cat" fits on it's blade. Just rIght!

I turned the Cobalt Dendritic Basic so you can see the blade engravings. This particular one has ~CO~ engraved on it, for the element Cobalt, instead of usual word Cobalt. Someone asked David to do that way, but never picked up the knife. It's mine now!!

Here are the two fancy Utilities, by themselves. Very similar, but in person the copper spacer rings on the plain bladed one really make the whole knife look different, and I like the wood on the handle better, too. But I sure like that "Big Cat" blade!

I feel like one _lucky_ guy!!!

Wise choice! and nice knives, love the Boye works. I have the 4" Basic #3 but in regular dendredic steel, cuts very well!

Thanks G2! I've only cut mundane household things so far, but the one I've used cuts fine! :-)

** Hey - everybody knows you can click on the small pictures to see big ones, right? **

No comments on the "Big Cat" etching? I thought it was pretty cool! :-)

Nice knives.
What kind of etchings were available and how much etching added to price. I remember seeing some work with etchings that were Tolkien inspired.

Hey thanks everybody! I feel better now! :-)

Tommi, take a look at David Boye Knife Gallery , that will give you some idea. Also, I believe Francine can do much more elaborate work, upon request.
