How to stain Elk stag

Slightly OT since this involves pistol grips for a single action, but would apply to knife handles as well. What I want to do is thin down a set of Elk stag grips around the butt, sand smooth and then polish. I'm leaving most of the existing bark as is.

Since the white part of the stag is in stark contrast with the blued frame, I want to "antique" the stag to a mellow yellow/brown.

Any recommendations? Shoe polish? Leather dye? MinWax wood stain?

Thanks, Don

I believe the Mother of pearl co. pressure dyes stag.

They amberize it,but elk is pretty soft and the high pressures will remove the soft part.I sent them a bunch and couldnt use a lot of it.The OP might try some dark scratch cover furniture polish.I forget the brand, but i've had some limited success with it.

Thanks Seals, I think you mean Old English Furniture Polish. I forgot I have some, I'll try it. I also plan to practice on some scrap deer horn first.

You could try tea. I used that method once to antique some red stag scales on a slip joint once, and it worked pretty well.

Coffee , tea , yeap furniture polish lol , it does work ! Shoe leather dye.. there are many methods to dye stag or bone.
