My wife discovered a neat way to get our baby girl interested in knives at 22 months old: wooden knife and wooden fruit and bread loaf (pre-cut and stuck together with velcro) :D

Aww man, I gotta have that for my 2 1/2 yr old. Where did she get it? What company? Thanks

Okay, found it. "Melissa & Doug" is the company. I will probably look at the educational toy stores in the area.

Thats awesome. I made my first knife when i was 6 years old. I used knives before that aswell.

Great idea!

Are you sure that whatever's in the lower right corner of the first photo came with that kit, though? ;)

Now, now, Chris. That's a carrot! :D Rom, you're right. It's Melissa & Doug. I should have posted it here, but I didn't know myself until I got home tonight.

Of course it is. ;)

I've never seen a kit like that before, but I love it! My only worry would be introducing a child to the act of cutting before they can understand that there are right/wrong things to cut and a right/wrong way to cut. I hope she doesn't get a hold of a real knife before she's learned that.

I'm with you Chris. I love the kit, BUT...I can't forget my 1 year old granddaughter coming up to me and giving me one of the two CLOSED barlows I kept (note past tense) by my computer. Then a couple minutes later she brought me the OTHER ONE!!!

Since I can barely open them there was no danger, BUT that little rascal watches everything and I know if I got her the kit it wouldn't be long before she'd be taking a real knife to something, like the dog!! Think I'll wait awhile.

All the best to all the forumites,

LANNY

I wreaked havoc with a pair of scissors when I was a kid. They were out of reach, but when does that matter to a determined child? I cut through about 5 or 6 things before I was caught, including an original Star Wars Darth Vadar punching bag. :(

Proving that someone out there has a sense of humour, the first thing I cut with my first knife was myself.

I used to love cutting stuff as a kid. I was 3, I think, or perhaps 4, when I took a pair of scissors to a really expensive suit my dad had bought on vacation in Holland and turned the pants into a pair of shorts. Got the scolding of my life for that from my dad. My mom was laughing her head off! However, I used to cut things up regularly -- usually things that didn't need cutting like clothing, curtains and papers.

i once intercepted one of my toddlers when she was on her way to cut a piece out of the ears of my Rottweiler pup. Although i was lucky enough to intercept her before she did, i wonder what would have happened with my daughter and the dog. The dog grew up with both ears, and she has never shown any agression to any living thing.
The funny thing is that it was with special sheers to cut paterns into paper. Just lucky i don't have a stamp-ear dog, or my girl didn't got bitten. :D
