Fairly new to collecting better knives and would like to know what is the best way to store them? I know lots of people go out and but fancy cases for each knife but I just dont see the need for that.

Someone told me to simply wipe them down, apply a very thin coat of Rigs oil and then wrap them up in a old undershirt?

Storing knives is like storing your firearms. Be sure they are clean, if necessary wipe down with a little oil. If you want you can bag them. Main thing is to store them in a dry location. That is about all there is to it. As for lube I like the dry lube Tuf-Glide.

I just got a zippered knife case off eBay. I am able to mount all my precious steel in this case and zip it close keeping them dust free. I'm now able to carry my small collection with me for show and tell whenever I want without worrying about storage boxes.

Hi, I store my modest collection in this 'watchmakers' cabinet. The bottom two drawers have boxed knives but most of mine are older and without boxes so thay just sit in the drawers. That way I can look at them any time.

Hello All,

Just to let y'all know from experience, wrapping your knives up in any kind of cloth could be a very costly mistake. Any and all cloth will collect moisture!.:thumbdn:

My personal opinion with economy in mind is to oil them with a decent machine oil(3-in-1) every 6 mos. and set them in a DECENT KNIFE cabinet dedicated to this cause about a 1/2 an inch apart from one another in any air conditioned dwelling.

However, if you want to go extravagant..

This practice is what my rich friend subscribes too..

This is the type of knife cabinet I am speaking about!!.. Thanks S~K!

Mine all all over. drawers, shelves, desktop, on pc, by tv remote, even in pocket! They never get dusty because I seemingly pick them up every day or two to swap out on my belt or in pocket, or just to look at and play with!

Like firearms keeping knives out of the sheath or case is essential as mentioned above, due to the moisture factor. Keep them clean them and lube them lightly. Sold a two year old shotgun today and got an extra 100.00 for it cause he said, "You don't store this in a zippered case do you?" I said "no." He said, otherwise It would surely have had rust on in. This guy knows his stuff, biggest dealer in my part of the state.

-Best Wishes-

Hey sunnyd. Is that knife vacu-packed for extra freshness. What if you want to play with it?

LOL, LOL!!!:D

I do not use that form of storage!.. That is one of several of a friend of mines scout knives that I purchased not to long ago.. And he is a bit anal about storage as you can see.;)

Its funny,, you said the same thing I did..: "What if'n you want to play with it?"

You are the best,

Anthony

Sunnyd, you know what they say about great minds. I think vacu-packing is way over the top. What is the point (IMO) if you can't take them out for a spin once in awhile? Just about time for me to sign off. If you're up early/late I'll try to post something for you in the morning. take care.

I keep mine in an aluminum pistol case, one with a egg crate foam inserts. I keep them wiped down and dry and this seems to work pretty well.

Thanks!
I was hoping they were currently produced and commercially available.

That's not strictly true. I've got long-guns and pistols that are more than 10 times as old as that and not a one of them has ever had a spot of rust on them anywhere. Then again: I use nothing but Boyt cloth long-gun cases and pistol rugs, I never put a firearm away if it or its case has been in even very humid weather--without airing-out at least overnight, and I keep 'em all lubed.

Your buyer was just being cautious.

That, IMO, is just about the absolutely worst thing you could do. The aluminum doesn't "breath," therefor any moisture trapped inside the case is going to stay inside the case. Neither does the foam "breath." So any moisture-laden air trapped in all those little foamy cells and pockets is going to stay in those little foamy cells and pockets, and precipitate into water, some right up against the sides of your knives, if the temperature cools.

Foam-filled aluminum or plastic hard cases are good for transportation, but very, very bad for long-term storage, IMO. And even when used for transporation: I wouldn't allow metal bits to remain long in direct contact with that foam. For firearms: I'd put it inside a gun sock and then put it in the case. For knives I'd figure out something similar.

The way I figure it, many of my knives have survived perfectly well for decades or even a century or more without being stored in a sock or a vacu-pak. Obviously, I won't do anything to intentionally harm them, but I am not of the opinion that I really need to do anything particularly special other than keep them clean, dry and add a little oil now and then. Just my 2p worth.
