hey, how do you store water, say, in your car? i am concerned with the varying temperatures-- winter i'm not bothered with, but during the summer, the blazing temp. of my trunk is probably a breeding ground for bacteria.

i keep about 8 bottled spring waters in my trunk. they have been there for about a year now. do you think they are still good? if not, i'll replace them, but how can i do better storing it long term?

thanks!

Those plastic bottles can allow smells to transfer throught the plastic. You may wind up with gasoline or oily tasting water. I have the same problem here in Brazil I like to keep a supply of drinking water in the car. I just rotate the bottles or put fresh water in if I'm going on a road trip.

Just drink them now and again to keep the rotation fresh. Also, store them in a leak proof container in case you are keeping them with other items.

Pict hit it on the head...just rotate the water bottles. I usually buy a case and keep in my truck and go through it. I've also kept the 2qt Nalgene (square Space-saver) jugs with water, and just rotated it out every six months, or monthly during the summer. If you're really concerned, just put a few drops of aerobic oxygen in your bottles/storage containers.

If taste isn't too much of a concern you can add a couple of drops of bleach and seal the bottles. This will disinfect the water for a very long time and it doesn't cost very much since a gallon of bleach will disinfect hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water.

Here is some info that may be of value.
