I keep forgetting what others tell me about care so I am going to post here and bookmark it! Anyways, I had John (Stomper, JK Handmade Knives) make me a custom for Christmas. It's made out of 01, with blue liners and maple burl handles that are unfinished. How do i care for all those parts? Also, the sheath is leather with a stain on it, how do i care for that too? Inside the sheath where the blade would sit, is unfinished. Here are some pictures to get a better idea:

Keep a light coat of a rust-preventative on the exposed metal. The various choices have been discussed here ad-infinitum (and ad-nauseum).

Do not store the knife in the sheath for long periods.

A good leather preservative can be used on the sheath exterior. Lots of choices available there, too.

O-1 tool steel will stain and/or tarnish with use. If you want to keep the blade pristine, don't use it. If you use it, just keep it clean and rust-free.
It would be a shame, IMO, not to use such a well crafted knife.

Congratulations on your purchase. :)

I don't mind character marks on my knife. I actually like a used look. Will it rust easily? I put a light coating of oil on it and wiped it off, it keeps a film on it right? I use Hoppes gun oil. What can and can't i get on the handle?

O-1 is a very rusty steel, but with some care you will be o.k. I would suggest asking these type of questions before making your next purchase.

Some Kiwi neutral shoe polish, which is basically a light wax, will work well on the handle and the sheath. Should be available at your local grocery or drug store. Rub a little on with your fingers, and buff with a soft cloth.
Yes, a light film of gun oil will keep the blade from rusting.

Another idea would be to contact the maker and ask what he recommends.

Or, send the knife to me for safe keeping ;)

PM me with address and such. Just kidding! But thanks for the help. Car wax work just as well on handle/blade? Sheath i have saddle soap? No?

I just put some S100 motorcycle wax on it and its actually pretty nice. Handle and all. There was some rust starting on the spine. This looks like it's going to be a PITA... lol.

Saddle soap is for cleaning leather. It will also soften it, so, no.
Kiwi is cheap enough.
Credit goes to Bill DeShivs for the kiwi idea. It works!

I put leather conditioner on it the other night, before you all posted, because i found it. It seemed to clean off the leftover stain and the sheath feels and looks much better.
