How to tame that small khukuri bite...

I have a pen knife that I love, but it just doesn't fit the hand well. The cap bites the hand pretty bad. I know you can grind it down... but why damage the khuk? So I thought about capping it somehow, the question was HOW?

Well, I rummaged around my apartment and found a Brine rubber lacrosse shaft cap. Strong as hell, stretchable (with effort) and thick enough to tame the bite I think. Doesn't fit perfectly... and won't likely fit on anything with a wider diameter grip... But a pen or other small khuk should work. Here are a couple pics. The caps cost between $3 and $5 at most sporting goods stores.

and so attractive - one of them red rubber clown noses might work too. ;)

as you can see they are very 'tactical' & used by the Aussie army in the sand pile.

Attractive? Yeah, probably not... then again, I can remove it and the khukuri is not in any way altered. You can't say that if you start grinding the khukuri as some have suggested. /shrug

if its Your Kuk grind it ,
i "fix" all the one i feel belong to me , i pass on the ones that don't feel right

You never know when one might come along that feels better and replaces the one you have... Oh well, if you don't like the idea, don't do it. It however works and leaves the khuk unaltered... preserving its resale and gifting value. If that's not important to you, I understand... it is to me.

Cool quick fix solution HR  Should have thought of that before I rehandled some of mine :p
This is what I did with my pen...

I like the idea Hiram. I do enjoy modding my khuks and knives and I also have some I want to keep original yet still use. I have cut a nice length of Ranger band from a fresh inner tube to fit my 17 1/4" WWIIs' handle and it works great. Keeping the handsome Satisal wood handle intact and allowing me to use her in the field with a good grip in cold and wet.
That lacrosse shaft cap looks like it would work well on more than a few of my rubber protected knife handles. Thanks for sharing the idea.

Eric,
That's a fine looking handle with beautiful patterns and I really like the curve.

That looks absolutely great!

The smaller Pen is known for having handles that can be too short. I got mine in a trade with Aliloff. He replaced the handle altogether with stacked leather.

This one is a user and the blade has been sandblasted.

I am notorious for ripping the handles off my knives. If the grip is uncomfortable I am unlikely to use it. I have no fear of modding the handles on my khuks that fall into the "user" category. Usually the first thing I do when they arrive is sand off the finish and remove any scratches or surface flaws in the wood. Then I treat the wood in several different ways, either with Danish oil, Feed 'N Wax or just Briwax. I don't have the patience for a Ferguson Tru-oil finish but they look much better when I'm done.

Don't be afraid to modify them in order to save "resale value". I'm sure the kamis modify their own khuks to suit themselves.

Good mod idea, Hiram... really liking Eric's.

Wish I had time, and skill. :p
