Hi,

I just picked up a Classic large Sebenza that is supposed to have an S30V blade. How can you tell if it is an S30V or BG 42 blade ? I thought there might be some sort of identification on the blade. Could someone tell me how to determine this a maybe post a picture of an S30V blade and a BG42 blade. Thanks.

If your knife came with a certificate it will say what type of blade steel was used. If not, you can probably call CRk and ask them.

The S30V blades have an "S" on there, but you have to take the knife apart to see it (it's on there near the pivot area). IIRC, the earlier runs of the S30V's didn't have the mark, so if that's the case, give CRK a call.

I didn't think their was any way to tell. For the blades that aren't marked with a "S", how could anyone tell?

I wondered the same thing when BG-42 came out and I aquired a sebbie that did no have paperwork. How to tell if it was ATS-34 or BG-42? I made a call to CRK and they informed me that the only way to tell was to melt the blades and see what were the metal contents....well obviously I decided it was not that important. So if you don't have a blade marked with the S, there really is no way to determine the blade steel just from looking at them...at least not that I'm aware of.:D :)

Funny Moe!

I'm no metallurgist but can't you tell by looking at the grain structure of the steel?
And then there is the spark test, but ya would't want to do that.
