How to tell S30V from BG42 Blade?

I bought a Large Sebenza last year very lightly used from another person. We have since moved and my wife threw away the box and paperwork not realizing that I might want to save it - God Bless her. Sad, but I can't remember what type of blade it is. Anyway, I looked all over the knife but I can't see any indication of whether the blade is BG42 or S30V. Is there an easy way to tell?

I think the S30V blades had a S stamped on them, you may need to remove the blade to find out. Larry

One way that I can tell.....a little goofy, but bear with me.....

I use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Cleaner on my blades. It puts a nice shine & protective coat on them. It comes in a little circular container & it is a white paste.....anyhooooo

When applying the paste to the BG-42, I get a really nice shiine out of it. Do it enough & it will become polished. It only had taken me about 4 applications to get her to a high polish.

Trying the same thing on my S30V & I get nowhere. I applied the stuff about a dozen times & it isn't any better than when I started. Tough stuff indeed!

Probably another good reason why I prefer BG-42 :D

Goofy way to find out...yes, but that's what worked for me.

Taking both knives apart I never noticed any S on the blade.....I could be blind though ;)

I have both BG42 and S30V Sebenzas and my S30V blade does indeed have an "S" on it, near the pivot hole. You have to remove the blade to see it. I'd recommend removing the blade and re-lubing it anyway. I use Militec-1 and opening/closing the blade is much smoother.

I took my large Sebenza apart today and it has an "s" on the blade by the pivot hole on the framelock side so I guess it is "S30v" instead of "BG42". Thanks to all that responded.

Yes, it's quite a bit smoother, but do you get more lint into the pivot area in the knife? I tried it once and after carrying my Seb for a day, there was so much stuff in there.

I haven't really noticed a lint problem. You just need to be careful not to use too much lube.

Or regularly vacuum your pockets. :D

Sorry. . .just couldn't resist. ;)
