I have a Busse Scrap Yard 511 and would like to thin out the blade a bit. Is that something relatively straightforward or should I send it out? Either way, please give me some guidance if you have experience and knowledge on the subject or who to send it to for the service. Thank you

If you mean reducing 1/4" stock down to 3/16", it is not easy to do. that much grinding will remove the finish, kill the heat treat, and unless you are equipped to grind straight lines, will leave you with something wholly unattractive. You would be better off starting with the blank stock that you want and grinding a new knife.

n2s.

From what I can tell, the 511 already has a full height flat grind. Regrind options are limited without reducing the stock thickness.

You could regrind it with a large diameter contact wheel (stopping the height of the grind at the spine) to address some of the geometry problems.

A knife maker would need to do this work for the best results.

Thank you for the replies. The 511 is a fairly low saber grind and I was wanting to do a high saber grind. I didn't think it was something I could do but I don't know of a knife maker that would or could do it.

Search for knife regrind services. There are plenty you can contact.

when regrinding a primary bevel, I hold the knife with the edge up against the belt. I look for the shadow between the face of the belt and the apex of the edge, and lightly hold the knife up to the belt to establish a flat surface by pulling from heel to tip. As the flat surface grows, it becomes easier to locate and then I apply more pressure. I do this until I shrink down that shadow to the thickness of the shoulder I'm looking for. Once there, I look again at the geometry of the bevel and can adjust it to a lower angle using the same method☝️
