Anyone know what tool to use to tighten the leatherman charge hinges? I hope you don't have to buy a special tool or send it in for tightening...

Thanks

Well, Jimmy, despite your hopes, that is exactly what you have to do (either or). A couple companies make a torx-bits with holes in the center that seem like they would do the trick.

Good luck,

anyone know where I could pick some up.. Why do they have to be annoying and do this???? It's Ridiculous

You can get security-Torx bits and drivers at Lowes (at least ~1 year ago when I picked up mine) and Home Depot would probably have some as well. Be careful when trying to turn those bolts because the post in the center can break of and get lodged in the bit/driver on the smaller sizes. Of course then you've just made a "normal" Torx bolt..... and probably voided some warranty as well.

Unfortunately, there's no painless solution. Those are TORX PLUS Tamper Resistant fasteners. These are NOT the same as normal Torx Tamper Resistant fasteners. Five lobes instead of six. Your local hardware store will NOT have these drivers. In the past, the easiest source was Snap-On, either your local dealer or online. Right now their online store appears to be "out of stock." Not sure if they were jumped on by those trying to maintain tight rein on these or what. Other online sources require you to tell a little white lie to get the tool. It's a royal PITA... :thumbdn:

Sorry about that misinformation. I never actually used my bits on my Leatherman pivot and just assumed they were the same at first glance. That other format does sound like a PITA....

I count 6 lobes on mine, not 5

I have had two Charge's, my first was purchased about a year ago and had the 5 lobed tamper proof torx screws. I broke this one and sent it back to leatherman about 6 months ago and they sent me a new one. The new one has screws with 6 lobes.

So I guess Leatherman has produced both.

Also, Sears sells a very useful set of Craftsman tamperproof bits, something like 25 bits and a bit driver for $24. Includes the 6 lobe tamperproof torx along with several other kinds, no 5 lobed torx though.

Yeah, I'd heard they changed them.

Mine is a first year model WAVE.

Got the Wiha security bit set. Real useful, except for why I bought it.

Someplaces treat the five lobe like they are a sacred key or such.

OK, after messages here, checked with Leatherman and they confirmed that they have changed to the standard Torx Tamper Resistant. Why didn't they just go to plain old Torx? <shrug> They say they still want the tool to be tamper resistant and encourage folks to send theirs in for adjustment. Whatever... It's good news for the tool/knife enthusiast. This change is just for the Wave, Charge and Surge.

If you send it in,you will be very happy when it returns.I did and i got it back quickly(about 18 days) and it looked and worked better than new.More polished and perfectly adjusted.
