Hey,

I have a knife that has polished micarta scales.I prefer the grainy feel of micarta over the polished micarta. What is the best way to do this?Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bobby

I usually finish micarta with scotchbrite (bordeaux-red sheeths) or 1500 grit sanding paper. To get a satin finish, I recommend scotchbrite..

just my opinion...

Try bead blasting. As an example, go to Greg lightfoots website. I believe he bead blasts all his micarta stuff.

bead blasting will work the best. if you dont have access to a blaster, try scrubbing with 00 steel wool and acetone.

To get the "grainy feel" the best method is to blast it in a cabinet. I like to use crushed glass on micarta for that feel you are speaking of.

If you can't do it yourself, send it to me and I'll do it along with some of my own. If you pay shipping I'll do it for a thank you.

there are some areas that are not addressed in the response "beadblast".....two specifically......one is the knife must be taken completely apart so you dont get media inside the working mechanism......the other is.....If you blast titanium liners....especially with coarse media and high pressure....one one side; the ti will warp BIG TIME......be careful.....

I have had good results with green scotchbrite pads. When I get to the final finish I get more even results if I lay the pad on my bench and push or pull the handle along its length. Varying the pressure changes the depth of the finish. The nice thing about a hand worked finish is that you can easily touch it up by repeating the procedure you used to create it. No special tools needed.

Thanks guys!! I have a blasting cabinet available so I thik I'll be able to do it.

Nick,thanks for the offer!

I truly appreciate all the info yall have shared with me!

Thanks again,

Bobby

Keep in mind though, with blasting the dimensions change ever so slightly. They may compromise its fit to kydex sheaths. If you really want a working texture, have the scales checkered.
