how to use elk ivory on knife lanyard

I don't normally like lanyards. But I have a small fixed blade that I want to use in the field hunting for small work. I that I think might benefit from a small lanyard. I was thinking maybe i could do a small paracord lanyard with one of the elk ivorys I took on a previous hunt. Any ideas how I could do this? has anyone done this before with a elk ivory?

I'd probably drill a 4mm (5/32) hole in the root of the ivory near where it would have protruded from the gums and tie it into the end of the lanyard something like this:

I've found that lanyards just get gummed up with blood and fat and stuff when field dressing.
