How to use rag micarta?

I got a sample of rag micarta from Kit Carson and don't know how to use it. One side of it has a really hard, polished surface, but when I try and finish it it just remains flaky and gross. Also, is this a decent material to even mess with, or is it too ugly for most applications?

Try R.W. Wilson in Weirton, W.VA. He's the only guy I have ever got it from. Phone # is in the Knives annuals.

I treat it about it about like canvas micarta. Rough it out, then fine sand it.
I bead blast it for final finish.

I have always treated rag micarta as a wood when I am working with it, use sharp belts cause it does burn rather easily, and if you are looking for a high gloss shine, try using a sealer, I always found super glue worke well with it. The fibers in that stuff can really soak up some liquids...

I like Rag micarta when sealed and finished to a high polish, almost looks like burled wood sometimes, depending on which kind/batch you got your hands on..

The stuff I have found now is mostly greens, the old stuff that I am holding on to for special peices was the stuff sold in sheats not in blocks, it was much denser and had a brownish base to it rather than the green, it looks almost like tourtoise<sp> shell when buffed...

Hope I could put a different spin on the material for ya..

Alan Folts...
