How to use the can opener on SAKs?

Even though I have used SAKs numerous times before, I just realized that I do not know how to use the can opener (to open tin cans). I normally use a regular can opener to open cans, but today I used my SAK. I was able to punch a slit on the lid, but I was unable to drag it around the can to open it. When I tried to drag the SAK's can opener along the rim of the can, it got bended and stuck. I am pretty sure that I was doing something wrong, but I just don't know what. Please help me out

You don't drag the can opener. You punch, turn the can clockwise a bit, punch again, repeat until done.

Place the hook of the can opener just under the rim on the outside of the can, then use that leverage to pull up and force the pointed end into the can. Lift, rotate the can and punch it into the can some more.

@LongDistance,

What type of Vic can opener are you using?

From your post, it appears to me you are going in a clockwise direction ("dragging" or cutting with the can opener towards you) when can opening. For the standard Vic can-opener, the cutting blade is in front so your direction should be counter-clockwise (cutting away from you). If you use the Vic combo-tool, then your primary orientation (cutting towards you) would be correct. =)

In my own experience, since the Vic combo-tool has an unsharpened cutting edge, it has a greater tendency to bend the can lid it is opening. I find it easier to open cans using the forward cutting style Vic can-opener. =)

oh I see. I thought you move your SAK instead of rotating the can while the SAK remains stationary. Thanks for the help guys.

I used to do the same, until someone showed me that turning the can counterclockwise would make the next cut easier.
