Bladeforums.com has its own search engine. As of now, 2,234,501 posts have been made here since 1998 and while you are reading this, several new posts are probably being written. That’s why this board’s search function is truly a powerful tool – if you know how to use it! And that’s what this post is all about: showing you how to use it for optimal results.
Please take the time to read this rather long post, in the long run it will most likely save you far more time than you invested into reading it.

First of all, I’ll show you how to find it. On every page there’s a blue bar right below the navigation bar (the one that shows you which forum or topic you are currently browsing). One of the options to be found on this bar is “Search”. Click it and a small window will show up.

This small window is the basic search. It doesn’t give you any options besides entering one or more keywords. A little trick (that can also be used in the advanced search field of course) is to exclude certain words you don’t want the engine to find in the posts you're looking for. You can do this by putting a “-“ in front of the word you want the engine to ignore.

If you are looking for something very specific (keywords that aren’t included in many threads), the basic search interface is all you need to find information on that subject. But for most purposes, you’ll need to use the advanced interface to get useful results without having to wade through hundreds of threads that don’t really pertain to the subject you’re looking for.

If your search returns a browser error along the lines of "The page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings", your search may be overloading the server. Try narrowing your search by using more key words or in the Advanced Search, try choosing “Search Titles Only” instead of the default value of “Search Entire Posts” in the advanced search interface.

To access the advanced search, you have to click “Advanced Search” in the basic search window (who woulda thunk it?).

The advanced search gives you several options. Of course you can enter your keyword(s) here too, in the upper left corner. Below the keyword field, the first important advanced feature comes into play. The pull-down menu lets you specify that only threads with the keywords in their subject line (as opposed to the whole body of the message) will show up. This is particularly useful to let the search engine sort out threads that don’t primarily pertain to the keyword(s) entered.
For example, a basic query for “VG-10” (a steel type) will trigger 500 results and most of them don’t have much to do with the subject you’re looking for. Narrowing it down by selecting “Search Titles Only” will provide you with 158 results, many of which are directly related to the discussion of the properties of VG-10 steel.

You can also search by user name. This field is located in the upper right corner of the advanced search page. This feature comes in handy when you remember that a certain member made a particularly helpful post on a topic and you can’t find it by using keywords alone.
An example would be entering “Dragonfly” (a Spyderco model) in the keyword field and “Sal Glesser” (Spyderco’s owner) in the user field. This will provide you with all threads where Sal Glesser mentioned the Dragonfly.
You can further limit the results by searching for threads started by that user. This feature can be found in the pull-down menu.
If you can’t remember the whole name/nickname of the user you are looking for, enter the partial name and “un-check” the “Exact name” box (it won’t correct misspellings though).
Such a query for “Glesser” will show you posts made by Sal or his son Eric Glesser.

Then there’s the “Find Threads with at least/at most X Replies” option. This is particularly useful if you want to find a long, extensive discussion on a subject you want to know more about or if you want to find a particular thread you remember as being very short or long.

Another option that can help you narrow the results down is the feature that allows you to limit your search to a particular timespan. Very helpful if you remember that the thread you’re looking for was posted within the last month or more than a year ago, for example.

In order to get a better overview, you can sort the results by different attributes, like the number of replies in order to get the threads that were the most active first.

Then there’s the Show Results as Threads/Posts feature which lets you access individual posts instead of entire threads. The advantage of this is that you can preview these posts in order to find the information you’re looking for without clicking through countless threads.

You may also search individual forums, just click on a forum in the “Search in Forum(s)” field. You can also select more than one forum by pressing the Ctrl key while clicking them. Or you can press Shift while selecting two different forums to mark them and everything in between. This is often helpful in order to exclude posts in the “For Sale” forums, for example.
The “Also search in child forums” box is not very important here as BFC (unlike some other forums) doesn’t use the option of child forums much: at the moment, the Pass-Around Forum (a sub-forum of the Blade Discussion Forum) is Bladeforums’ only child forum.

A final, but important hint: be a bit creative.
For example, if you're looking for people's opinions on the knife magazines "Tactical Knives" and "BLADE", feeding the search engine with their titles won't get you far. These terms are just too common on this board - and in a different context no less. That's where you come into play: think about which terms would usually be associated with magazines and mentioned when these magazine are discussed. The word "publication" comes to mind. Then there's another important knife rag called "Knives Illustrated". Enter the keywords "publication illustrated" and you will find plenty of useful posts.

Hi Quiet Storm-

Fantastic post. This came just in time because I was about to create a brand new post asking folks on the forum what they think about the Sebenza folding knife. ;)

The other good thing about "adding" onto an existing thread is that newbies get to take advantage of all the accumulated knowledge contained inside...rather than just seeing new responses to their query. Plus, one gets to see stuff written by people like the late, great James K. Mattis.

Good point.

But I guess that most people will ignore this post anyway, I even get (anonymous) rep points by cowardly dimwits calling me a "wannabe" or "soup nazi" (whatever that is supposed to mean) for posting stuff like this. Of course, some of them never get that their rep points don't even count because their reputation is bad or they just registered.

I don't bring this up to complain about red chiclets (to anyone who wants to give me a green chiclet for this thread just to make up for them, please don't), it's just that I find it weird that someone would actually neg rep me for investing a few hours into making this great board even better. Probably the same folks who come here asking stuff without caring about netiquette or contributing anything worthwhile.

You're doing a good job Quiet Storm.

Don't let "the man" keep you down :D

Ignore the fools and their folly.

"Soup Nazi" is a character from an episode of Seinfeld- I think he ran some sort of deli, and would deny people his awesome soup by saying "no soup for you!!!" It was pretty funny. I dont really know what that has to do with search engines, however.

On a side note, you do seem overly concerned with the very same red chiclets you claim dont concern you. :p

Good post about how the search engine works. But I am also thinking most will ignore it. Thanks for the effort though :D

It's the fact that people disapprove of others trying to make this place better that I find strange, no matter if they do that by posting their disapproval or by handing out anonymous rep points.
Even if it was the negative points that bother me, a point and another one that doesn't even count towards my score don't really affect my total of currently 528 all that much. ;)
However, it is disappointing that we have so many members who don't even have the balls to sign the negative reputation they hand out.

I think part of the problem is laziness. A new member can look through the back posts with the search engine for hours, or he can just ask a question. I am sure most people savy enough to find this place, join up and start a thread could also figure out the search function. They just don't want to take the time to do any research, they want a quick answer. I wish this was not the case, but I think it is. Stickys also seem to be ignored more than they are read. I do applaud all your efforts and hope that I am wrong and this works.

Hmmm. . . Seems someone has a grudge against me- for educating him about "seinfeld"? Or for questioning if he cares about chiclets?

First time I check my chiclets, and. . .
I just found a nice little red chiclet with this note attached from none other than "quiet Storm"

Here's a chiclet, f*cking retard. - Quiet storm

Nice of you! Thanks :D Good to be insulted by someone with Developmental Disabilities- I am proud of how far you've come! ;) :p

Edit: MMM I like the cherry flavored ones best! :D
Edit 2: Ignore my post, I dont want it to take attention away from this important post about search engines, I was just cracking wise, is all. :)

I can only contribute to the positive feedback here :). I found the Search function very useful on many forums, and it saved me time on several occasions.
For example, I was searching on stuff about Ka-Bar knives. I wanted to ask immediately on the forums here, but as Ka-Bar is so well-known, that would've been pretty stupid. So, a search gave me too much info, but after ploughing on thorugh several pages, I found a thread exactly as I wanted to make. (with a good link in it after all).
(Besides, if anyone has good reviews on Ka-Bar's, especially the 1211, pls do tell me :D )
So, search engine ? Use it.

Oh, and those negreppers ? They're probably just jealous.

I don't think I'll put any of MY paycheck on that.........thank you very much!:D

Open your eyes, you didn't get this red chiclet for your post here. Think about it for a while and maybe you'll get why I dinged you.

Good grief this is turning into a big baby fest again.

Why do people acty like 10 year olds?

Blah blah blah blah Someone dinged someone.......blah blah blah

Get over it.

I think you're right, that is the way some people think. But they're absolutely wrong -- in fact the choice is usually between taking a few seconds to find the answer with a search or posting the question and waiting hours for responses.

Moderators, please don't move this to the Service & Support section, as many new guys won't look for something like this there. Maybe you can make this a sticky if you like it.

The way we organize things on Bladeforums, the Blade Discussion forum is only for talking about knives and we put tech support in the Service & Support forum. On the other hand you're right, new people often don't find Service & Support right away and they usually come to Blade Discussion first. So I made a new sticky thread in Blade Discussion pointing to Service & Support. I think that will help.

I've been thinking about writing a FAQ about the problems people most often have with the search function here (overload, mostly) and ways to work around them. I may end up adding your post to that one (when I write it) to make a sticky thread. I hate to clutter up a forum with too many sticky threads, but search issues keep coming up.... If I do I'll split off the extraneous posts in this thread; they don't need to be in a sticky.

Ya know what? I think this whole "search" thing is a bad idea. I mean, c'mon...what good does it do? I find it laughable that some folks have such a fixation on "searching" things. It's like a "search clique" or something. :D
Tim/QS-Danke. ;)

That's a great post, ;) it's a shame most people find it easier to ask than to do a little research.
