Ever wonder what that little needle is in your compass bezel that isn't your magnetic needle (if your compass has one, basic models won't)? It is used to determine slope and it is simple to use. Should you travel in avalanche territory, you can determine if your path of travel is safe. If you drive off road and know your vehicle's approach, breakover, traverse and departure angles, you can save yourself a lot of money in vehicle repairs. If you are better at geometry and math than I am (not difficult considering my math skills), you can determine much more. Your compass is not only used for navigation, check out this video to see how.

If you can't check out this video, simply turn your bezel to 270 degrees. Hold your compass horizontally and monitor that secondary needle. You will see it move depending how the compass is tilted. Read your angle on the inclinometer markings.
Hope this helps. For more compass skills, review my Land Navigation with Map and Compass free download here
