Any advice or techniques on not taking too much off the tip? I tend to over sharpen the last 3/16 or so no matter how flat I try to hold the stone. I even try to put a little more pressure toward the handle side of the blade when I get close to the tip. This happens when I am reprofiling an edge from say 20 dps to 15dps. Thanks for any tips.

you will have to work this out yourself! try to practice on some knifes you don't like!not your best ones, because your going to screw up until you learn how to hold the handle the proper way,go real light when reaching the tip and just let the stone glide easy,i still have problems near the choil area on most my spyderco's!but getting better though, practice my friend, and you will get there in time.

It helps to mark the bevel with a Sharpie, then take a fine stone, make a pass or two, and see where you're removing metal. Take a practice knife, mark it, and see what happens if you move the tip area into various positions... try closer, farther away, angling the knife as you approach the tip area so the tip is closer to the pivot, etc. With a bit of practice you'll know where to position the knife/tip for best results.

I'd recommend you not try to make adjustments by using more or less pressure in different areas... that'll cause more problems. Learn to adjust by moving the knife. Watch Ben's excellent videos, there's tons of tips in them (no pun intended). :D
