Hey, I guess this is the best place to post this question. First off, I'm kinda new here. I'm an ironworker in ny and a welder as well. You could say I like working with steel. So I thought it would be in my best interest to try out knife making as a hobby, who knows where it can go. So yea I want to learn how to make my own knife or knives for that matter. Eventually I want to make folding knives. Not that I want to forge the metal but I'd like to start by ordering the steel and getting the equipment to grind it down and then put a nice handle on it. Then like I said I hope to be able to get the right stuff to make folding knives (maybe I can just skip right to making a folder). Where can I get the information on technique, equipment, and whatever else i'd need to know? I'm really serious about this, I'm willing to invest some money to get the right tools and everything, right this second. If I don't do it now I'll find something new to try out next week and forget all about this. Anyway I'll be posting lots of pictures of it. Thanks -Ray

Wecome to the forum, I am an ironworker also, local 15, although I did work out of local 40 for a few months..There are a few more of us here..As far as how to get started look at the top of this fourm for the newbies thread..lots of good info there..good luck and keep at it, it isn't easy ( I broke a blade today) but it is worth the effort!!

Making knives can be as rewarding as it is frustrating, so be prepared. A lot of guys start up, discover it involves a lot of work and more learning than one might expect, then quit.

Some guys start up by buying stuff from here:

http://www.knifekits.com/

You can learn a lot by handling Darrel's kits and see/feel what is involved first hand before making every part yourself.

Best of luck!

Damn you guys are awsome. That info helps alot. I'm gonna try it out and see what happens. Hey nice to meet you Rocketmann, yea I'm an apprentice working out of 361 right now but since I live in Jersey I hope to get most of my work in manhattan/bronx but I'll work whereever I have to. Ok Thanks alot guys.

Check out the newbies stickies at the top of this forum. There is a lot of getting started info. Lots of tutorials and info on knifehow, www.knifehow.com . Make your first purchases be ,"The $50 Knife Shop",by Wayne Goddard; "Step-by-Step Knifemaking",by David Boye; and " The Complete Bladesmith",by Jim Hrisoulas. They will teach you what equipment and supplies you need. Order the catalogs from two or three knife suppliers, too. Texas Knife Supply, Jantz, K&G, are good ones. Trying a knife kit in the beginning is an easy start. Welcome to the BF.

These are two more books I think are helpful:

Blade's Guide to Making Knives
The Complete Book of Pocketknife Repair: A Cutler's Manual

Blade's Guide basically has condensed versions of the $50 Knife Shop and several other articles that are concise and thorough.

Pocketknife Repair seems dated, but it is still very good. It was very helpful to me.
